The Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal

On 1 December 2009, the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) opened its doors for business. In what has been described as ‘the biggest shake up in Queensland’s judicial system for 50 years’, 18 independent tribunals have been consolidated into one.

QCAT is modelled on the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), which has been operating since June 1998. Like its Victorian counterpart, QCAT aims to be a one stop shop for many aspects of the justice system. Approximately 300 different kinds of applications and proceedings, relating to over 200 pieces of legislation, will now be brought before this new institution.
