Important changes to disability discrimination legislation

Employers need to be aware of a number of significant changes that have recently been made to the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) (DDA) and other federal anti discrimination laws.

The changes are a result of the Disability Discrimination and Other Human Rights Legislation Amendment Act 2009 (the Act), which was introduced into the Federal Parliament on 3 December 2008, and received Royal Assent on 8 July 2009.

A number of key provisions in the Act came into operation on 5 August 2009. Other provisions will come into operation on 8 January 2010 unless proclaimed earlier.
