Labor’s TJ Ryan may have introduced Queensland’s first compulsory workers compensation scheme in 1916, but in 1995 and, indeed, in 2010 it has been his political offspring that has all but brought the scheme to its financial knees, to the verge of insolvency and decay. There has been an enormous journey, an extraordinary effluxion of time and a compromising of ideology in the nine decades since TJ Ryan introduced the scheme. The Labor Party led by Anna Bligh in 2010 is but a pale imitation of the party headed in 1916 by TJ Ryan, a man whose principles were honed and sharpened in the forge of 20th century class warfare—the battle over basic workers entitlements, wages and conditions…
